Behind the scenes of the animated movie

Translating the best selling Death of Superman saga into a 70 minute animated movie is a daunting task. Of course in that time frame not everything will be covered, which might upset purists, but unless you have the money to produce a story on a Peter Jackson scale, that’s inevitable.

The other purist constituency who might quibble over details would be fans of the Superman animated series, disappointed that different voice actors are being used and the look of the characters will be different. However, for the rest of us, this should be a very intense and entertaining movie. (more…)

Superman may find it harder to squash a spider than leap tall buildings in a single bound when he returns to theaters this summer

It’s not hard to make an action-packed superhero movie today, especially with the help of computer generated special effects, but it is hard to get an audience to buy tickets if that’s all the movie has to offer. Nearly thirty years ago the tagline “You will believe a man can fly” was enough to bring the curious into theaters to watch the first Superman movie. The whole concept of a big screen, big budget comic book movie was brand new. Unfortunately for Superman, that novelty has worn off in ensuing years and superhero movies have become common, but not all of them have been successful.

And I’m not just talking about movies such as The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Punisher putting in less than stellar showings at the box-office. Even a returning favorite found it hard to recoup his former glory. (more…)

Superman movie costume

For better or worse, the new Superman costume will be used in Superman Returns, which is set to hit the theaters next summer. Many Superman fans dislike the costume for several reasons: cheap t-shirt neckline, small emblem made of plastic, bikini briefs, short boots and a plastic cape. They also dislike the stylized belt buckle, which traditionally is just a small circle.

However, I won’t continue a fanboyish tirade about the costume because it’s clear that it’s going to be used in the new movie and so there’s no point in complaining further. However, the redesign aside, there are reasons why the suit traditionally had a particular look. (more…)
