No character on Smallville has had more speculation on who she might really be than Chloe Sullivan. Why? Because she is not a canon character currently in the Superman myth. There had been the “Chloe is Lois” theory, known in shorthand as the “Chlois” theory, but that was put to rest for all but a handful of hopeful die-hards when the real Lois Lane joined the cast. There were also theories that Chloe could be Lucy Lane until Lucy also showed up, or maybe she could be Cat Grant, but Chloe doesn’t pack the gear for that character.
However, there is confirmation that Chloe will be appearing in the comics as early as 2008, so that prompted me to post the Lena Thorul theory before the truth about Chloe Sullivan comes out and makes this, like the other theories, obsolete. Plus I will issue this spoiler warning that a new character is joining the Smallville cast next season, so read no further if you don’t want to be spoiled. Read the rest of this entry »

Lover’s Lane

Before pondering whether or not love changes Lois Lane, the first question should be why, with so many women in the world to choose from, did the most powerful being on Earth fall so incurably in love with Lois Lane? She’s certainly attractive, street smart and can hold her own in a fight, but again with the whole world to choose from, those attributes could easily apply to a lot of other women. So what was it?
To understand Superman’s attraction to Lois Lane, you first have to understand Superman. Read the rest of this entry »

Holding Out for a Hero

Was Lois so shallow that only a super man would do? No, not at all. In fact, on those very rare occasions when Clark Kent temporarily lost himself in the moment and acted and reacted like a normal guy, Lois found him quite appealing. Read the rest of this entry »

The Era of Her Ways

As established, Lois Lane took crazy chances and a daredevil’s approach to investigating, but there was a method to her madness.
Lois began life in the comics as a lonely hearts columnist giving advice to the lovelorn, but she wanted to be a real reporter.
Unfortunately, considering the temper of the times, news assignments generally weren’t given to female employees of great metropolitan newspapers. This gender bias, though typical for its era, was the biggest contributing factor for sowing the seeds of iconic Lois Lane.

“Contrary, domineering, pig-headed, bossy — brilliant”

A visitor to my site asked some very good questions about Lois Lane. Is she just a love interest for Superman? Is she a hero and an icon in her own right? If she is a hero and icon, then exactly who is iconic Lois Lane and what are the essential elements that define her?
First of all, to be considered iconic, a person, or in this case a fictional character, must make an impact on popular culture in such a way that we instantly recognize references made about the character. Considering the number of references to Lois Lane in songs, TV shows, books and movies, she easily fits the iconic definition. Also, since many of these references don’t include a reference to Superman, that answers the question as to whether or not Lois Lane merely functions as Superman’s love interest. However, the last question is the most complicated. Read the rest of this entry »

Superman may find it harder to squash a spider than leap tall buildings in a single bound when he returns to theaters this summer

It’s not hard to make an action-packed superhero movie today, especially with the help of computer generated special effects, but it is hard to get an audience to buy tickets if that’s all the movie has to offer. Nearly thirty years ago the tagline “You will believe a man can fly†was enough to bring the curious into theaters to watch the first Superman movie. The whole concept of a big screen, big budget comic book movie was brand new. Unfortunately for Superman, that novelty has worn off in ensuing years and superhero movies have become common, but not all of them have been successful.
And I’m not just talking about movies such as The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Punisher putting in less than stellar showings at the box-office. Even a returning favorite found it hard to recoup his former glory. Read the rest of this entry »

Justice League Unlimited, airing on the Cartoon Network, has introduced a romance between Superman and Lois Lane. That might not seem like earth-shattering news considering the famous couple have had a romance going for nearly 70 years in the comics, not to mention the movies and especially Lois and Clark The New Adventures of Superman. However a genuine romance is a rare thing on the various animated incarnations of Superman. Read the rest of this entry »

For better or worse, the new Superman costume will be used in Superman Returns, which is set to hit the theaters next summer. Many Superman fans dislike the costume for several reasons: cheap t-shirt neckline, small emblem made of plastic, bikini briefs, short boots and a plastic cape. They also dislike the stylized belt buckle, which traditionally is just a small circle.
However, I won’t continue a fanboyish tirade about the costume because it’s clear that it’s going to be used in the new movie and so there’s no point in complaining further. However, the redesign aside, there are reasons why the suit traditionally had a particular look. Read the rest of this entry »
